"90% of collaborative songwriting is about understanding the emotional state of the person you're writing with, the cause, and if it's worth changing." — Jeff Diggs Jr

Meeting an artist for the first time can lead to one of two outcomes, and I have enough experience to sense which direction it will take within the first few minutes. Sometimes, the new person I’m working with is either unable or unwilling to compromise for the song's sake. So, it’s a relief when I finally meet someone who shares my desire to do what’s best for the music, even if their ideas aren’t the main focus.

It's common for someone to come in and try to dictate the session, either to prove their expertise or silently show their discomfort with how things are being run. However, Kayori, our newest face in the studio, never displays any ego; she genuinely wants to create the best product for her audience.

She was very clear about the vibe she wanted to achieve and welcomed any suggestions that could help execute her vision. I enjoy the challenge of uncovering the potential I see in someone, even when they aren't fully aware of it themselves. Each session we've had so far has been a productive exchange, with moments of "This is how I hear it" and "Have you thought of this?" A process has resulted in a song that remains true to the original material while incorporating some surprises.

I'm excited to help her build her confidence and develop as an artist. Working with new people can be challenging for both sides, but I'm glad her experience has been positive and supportive of her goals. Be sure to connect with Kayori on Instagram at @‌kayorishanee and stay tuned as she gets ready to release new material!
