"The whole point of collaboration is that you give and take from each other, and that's how you create things that are totally new." — Virgil Abloh
Collaboration is essential for creating something greater than oneself. While there is nothing wrong with creating in solitude—much like writing in a diary where you express your thoughts and feelings—when aiming to produce something universal, it's important to look beyond your own perspective. V.Kiing approached her first session at Double M with a collaborative mindset. She understood that while you can achieve good things alone, you can accomplish great things together. With this in mind, she brought together myself, YG Dev, and DMV producer Anton Forever to create something that extended beyond her individual perspective while still incorporating all the elements that make her unique.
Inspired by the sounds of Janet Jackson, Usher, and similar artists, she already had a clear direction for her music. After one session with Anton to produce the beat, another session for writing, and a third for recording, I was able to observe the process more closely than I usually do. Typically, an artist comes to me with a pre-made beat, a few lyrics, and a general melody. This time, I was involved from the very beginning, which gave me a new perspective on my creative process. I hadn't listened to any of Kiing's music before our session. Going in without any prior knowledge allowed us to broaden our creative possibilities. This way, we could focus on what sounded good rather than trying to compete with her previous releases, which I have listened to since then and are great!
As we enter the post-production phase of this song, I am exploring a new approach to making music, and I am grateful for her influence in this process. She was also able to find a new studio home while in the States, which means the world to us as a studio. Take a listen to V.Kiing's "2 am" on all streaming platforms and give her a follow on Instagram at @v.kiing_. I'm looking forward to putting out what we made and return to the kitchen.
