"Trust that yesterday has prepared you to seize the opportunities of today." — Jeff Diggs Jr

On August 2nd and 3rd, NM Deezo, Janell Cruz, Dop3 Dreamz, and several other artists from the Double M family will participate in the Locally Grown Fest, a grassroots festival that originated in the DMV area. I am writing this in advance of the event to share my thoughts on its significance for me as the Head of Artist Development and for the artists I work with as they grow into legitimate musicians.

If all else fails, my primary responsibility on our team is to ensure that our artists create the most honest and well-rounded music possible at the point of creation. By contributing to our shows, such as Nast B's RDI Nights and even our monthly Thursday events, I've realized that my role extends beyond the control room. One day, the music I help bring to life will be performed, and my ability to create music that connects with the audience—or at least draws interest in the artist performing it—will be put to the test. As our artists take the stage once again in front of what is likely the largest crowd they have ever performed for, I want to offer my usual advice on making a memorable impression.

To the Double M artists and all other performers on the Locally Grown lineup: Do not try to be anyone other than yourself. In the studio, it’s just you and me, and in the booth, the only voice is your own. There isn't much room for outside influence. As many of you know, the stage feels different. When you go on, remember what worked well in the studio. Recall why people enjoyed the music you're performing when you first released it and reflect on the feelings you had while creating it.

Many of the people in the audience will be there for different reasons, whether to support other artists or simply to get out of the house. Focus solely on expressing your truth and connecting with those who resonate with it, and I promise you; you will make their list of reasons to come back next year.

Wishing every performer great success this weekend! Be sure to have someone record your performance so you can review it afterwards. Take note of what went well and what you can improve upon. Remember, external factors are minimal compared to how you felt while performing. If you felt good, then it was a successful performance.
