"A rising tide lifts all boats." — NEC
Friday night was unforgettable. I want to highlight the incredible opening performances that set the tone and created an atmosphere filled with love, energy, and anticipation for Nast B's headlining set.
I was pleasantly surprised when Momma B opened the show! Every event we host is a family affair, and this one was no different. SylviA debuted her first public release, "Megyidi," which means "I Believe." She began with a prayer, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to perform before her son and thanking everyone who came to support him. It was a heartwarming moment that transitioned perfectly into her song. I've never met an artist so eager to share their light with the world. For a brief ten minutes, she transformed DC9 into a church service, and the audience's reaction showed that it was precisely what we all needed to alleviate any tension felt upon arriving at the venue. Thank you, Momma B, for sharing your message. I look forward to more music and future performances from you!
Zubi, the second performer to take the stage, stepped in confidently after Momma B, delivering a vibrant mix of classic tracks and newer songs from his latest EP, "Undeniable." He may have just established DC9 as his new home base. Zubi has an exceptional talent for guiding the audience through contrasting moods, slowing them down for introspective moments, and then encouraging them to dance to more upbeat tracks, all within less than half an hour. It was clear how much he enjoys performing, and that infectious energy radiated from the stage, filling the room like no other. Although I've had a relationship with him for a few years now, this was my first time seeing Zubi live. After witnessing the much-talked-about performance, I don’t think it will be long before he headlines his own show.
Next up was Wavy Dave, the wave himself, dressed to impress and ready to keep the energy high. Some artists excel in the studio but struggle with live performances, while others are natural performers who depend on a team to complete their songs. Wavy is the complete package. I've seen him work in the studio more than I have seen him on stage and witnessing him showcase his music after observing the creative process was a true display of artistic mastery. The crowd knew every word to every song he played. Even major artists often fail to connect with the communities they claim to represent. You would have thought it was Wavy’s show, given the love he received and his skill in engaging with the audience. We often underestimate opening acts, mistaking them for lesser talents, when in fact, they offer a glimpse of who is next to shine. Wavy made a strong statement, declaring, "I have next!"
Our fourth opening performance was by ANF (Ain't Never Fold), who elevated the energy in the room even further. We owe thanks to Boss Beez for curating a lineup that transitioned seamlessly into Nast B. ANF embodies everything that RDI represents, making him the ideal act to conclude the opening performances. The songs he performed reflected his experiences with a fast-paced lifestyle, as well as motivational tracks that emphasized the importance of self-belief. He ended his set with an inspiring speech about the significance of trusting yourself and staying focused on your goals. He encouraged everyone to pursue their dreams so they, too, can find themselves on their own figurative stage and become a source of support for their community.
Nast's performance was divided into two parts. The first part showcased tracks from his back catalog as well as his recent releases. The second part featured a transcendent live performance of his latest hits, supported by the Thunder Boyz and DJ Digital Pip. In between sets, Tae Dawg surprised the audience with a special performance, allowing Nast to take a breather while keeping the energy high with his own setlist of legendary songs. It was an incredible night for RDI! Family, friends, and newcomers gathered in one place to support not only Nast B but also the revival of community spirit in our area. There was no violence, no hidden agendas, and no broken promises. Nast aimed to give the best show of his career and successfully brought his people together for his very first headliner. He did not disappoint!
Thank you to everyone who came out; our team gains just as much from these moments as you do. A special thank you to Mac Agency for the opportunity, and to DC9, our gracious hosts, for providing the venue that made this all possible! I can’t wait to share more about our next event. In the meantime, stay tuned and get involved with what Nast and our community have planned next by following us on Instagram at @NastB_ and @doublemstudios_!
