"Sleep is for the wealthy." This was the phrase I relied on in my youth when I was tired and needed motivation to keep working. While my ultimate goal of wealth remains the same, the meaning of that word has changed entirely. Back then, I was competing against the world, my parents' expectations, and my industry peers. I was up against everyone except the real opponent—myself.

True freedom cannot be achieved at the expense of others, and monetary wealth is the least valuable form of currency we have. We should only be competing with who we were yesterday, and depriving ourselves of basic needs like sleep is a surefire way to lose that competition.

It can feel like you’re on the wrong path when everything and everyone around you suggests that you are. However, take a moment to set aside those external influences and focus on how you feel. Consider whether the way you’re living and the goals you’re pursuing actually align with your happiness and fulfillment. We often compare ourselves to others when we feel uncertain about our lives, adopting someone else's timeline—a timeline they don’t even control—and trying to follow it. This is how we get distracted from our purpose.

When you know why you’re working and what you’re working for, you allow yourself to be human again. Taking care of yourself enables you to serve that unique reason for being on this earth.

Rest! You aren't missing out, nor are you losing by taking the time to recover and rejuvenate. To get what we truly want, we must show up as our best selves. This requires us to step back every once in a while—not only to keep track of ourselves but to remember who we are and the target we’re actually trying to hit.
