"You can learn new things at any time in your life if you're willing to be a beginner. If you actually learn to like being a beginner, the whole world opens up to you." — Barbara Sher
Many people avoid trying new things because it can be uncomfortable. They often think, "Why should I attempt something with a chance of failure when I'm satisfied with what I'm already doing?" However, I believe that what they perceive as contentment is actually complacency and a false sense of power, stemming from having "mastered" something that requires little effort or genuine challenge. Flo, one of our newest studio members, is the definition of a beginner recording artist. Having been in the music industry for over a decade, I can easily tell the difference between the new and the experienced. However, that distinction rarely matters except when determining where to start during a collaboration. The real qualities I'm looking for in the people I work with, as well as those who enter Double M, are a passion for music, a willingness to learn, and a determination not to give up until they find acceptable answers to their curiosities. Flo embodies these qualities wholeheartedly.
Although he has been a member for a little over a month, I had my first session with him just last week. The session ran smoothly, was quick, and helpful in many ways for both of us. Eventually, we started talking about life outside the studio, which led to an in-depth conversation about stocks. While the discussion felt in-depth for me, it was more of a surface-level conversation for Flo. He spoke about the market with such enthusiasm, clearly demonstrating his great interest and knowledge in the subject. In my mind, I commended him. Here was someone who was already excelling in a field and reaping the rewards of his literal investments, yet he chose to dedicate part of his time to an area where he was still a novice. After that conversation, he gained all my respect.
It's not about who is the best; it's about who is willing to look silly for a little while until they improve and then commit to getting better day after day. This reminds me of when I first got into music. After listening to my parents play their favorite songs and trying to figure out why I liked some more than others, I finally followed my curiosity. Initially inspired by Metro Boomin, I installed FL Studio 8 or 9 on my barely functioning Windows computer, and the rest is history in the making.
He demonstrated how valuable it can be to focus on what truly interests you. As we continue to work on new music, I look forward to spending time on things that catch my attention—things I have a natural "what's that about" reaction to—not stocks, haha!
