Why do something only halfway? Why commit your time to a pursuit and then fail to follow through? This question has been on my mind more often these days. Many "artists" begin this journey believing they can skip the hard work and ride the waves until they reach the metaphorical beach where those who have truly earned their success live fulfilling lives. Let me emphasize this: the path to purpose has never been easy and never will be. No journey toward fulfillment ever is.
You don’t pursue music just for fun; you turn to it when you have no other choice. When it becomes your natural medium for sharing the service you are meant to provide to the world, only then should you choose to walk this path. If that sounds extreme, so be it. Too many people have one foot in, chasing two rabbits, claiming they want a career when music is really just a hobby for them. They aren’t serious about dedicating their blood, sweat, and tears to it.
This is not a rant or a condemnation, but rather a warning. It is crucial to understand your purpose in this industry before you dive in. For those called to be musicians, the challenges of constant rejection, impossible expectations, and persistent imposter syndrome are tests we must face to become the individuals we need to be to fulfill our purpose.
If you view this industry as an easy path to quick wealth, you will struggle to make progress without compromising your integrity. Ultimately, you may find yourself ready to quit or resign to treating it merely as a hobby. Both rabbits are within reach, but you cannot catch both at the same time. Make a decision: lock in or let go!
