A lack of movement often stems from a lack of trust, particularly in oneself. When you are confident internally, you can take steps forward without hesitation. You become accustomed to embracing the unknown and testing your own strength. However, if you rarely push your limits, you may mistake your ceiling for someone else's.
Trust is essential in our industry. You must trust that your money is being spent correctly, that your manager is acting in your best interest, and that you have the capabilities to achieve your goals, among other things. While you may encounter dishonor, it’s vital not to compromise your own integrity in response.
In a business environment filled with hidden numbers and agendas, the most important thing you can do is learn to trust yourself and your vision. If necessary, move forward on your own, but make sure you keep moving.
You build this trust through consistency. If you waiver when recording a song because you’re unsure of “your sound”, make and release a lot of music. Out of what you make, what did you like making? After release, what did your audience gravitate towards? If you feel unprepared when it comes to performing, become a regular at a local open mic. Nothing in your line of sight or the length of your imagination is out of reach as long as you’re willing to try.
Before dismissing something that could make a difference, try it. Try it multiple times and then decide if it helps or not.
