I’ve trained my ears to hear the subtleties in music that casual listeners often fail to notice. I can tell the difference between an analog and digital recording, but rarely do I pay attention when someone sports a new pair of shoes or does something different with their hair. Zip reminds me to step away from time to time, lean into my other senses, and draw inspiration from other forms of self-expression.
I met Zip before Double M welcomed me as a team member. We were able to build a relationship off of mutual good taste in art instead of a typical business-client transaction. Yes, we’d talk about music, but it was clear that his heart was in fashion. Soon after my Double M initiation, I started hosting classes teaching artists about career independence, Zip made every class he could despite the material having little to do with patterns or sourcing garments. His willingness to do what’s required and then some is the reason I respect him and the reason he will succeed.
Pursuing design hasn’t stopped him from booking sessions. He continues to work in the studio fortifying his sense of sound while creating the next aesthetic innovation. I admire his impatience and DIY mentality. He understands waiting to be “put on” is futile and has decided to pave his way.
